Furniture assembly at home: price per hour and per item

There are two ways of charging for assembly. By the hour, which suits you when you have several small pieces or do not know how long it will take. Per item, at a fixed price, which is what we prefer when you send us the IKEA order or a photo of the boxes: you know the total before we arrive and you do not pay more if a drawer puts up a fight.

IKEA furniture assembly price by town

Valencia has an IKEA store in Alfafar and Alicante has its own, so in both cities assembly is usually booked straight after the same-day delivery. In central Valencia we add 10-15 % for parking and carrying boxes up without a lift. In Torrevieja and Benidorm the rate is the same as Alicante, with up to 10 % more in outlying urbanisations where the furniture arrives by courier.

What changes the assembly price

Assembly time depends more on the type of furniture than on its size. A 2 m PAX with sliding doors and 8 interior drawers takes three times longer than one with two hinged doors and shelves. This is what we look at when pricing:

• Number of parts and fittings. Drawers on runners, sliding doors and soft-close fittings multiply the time.
• Brand. IKEA comes with clear instructions; furniture from Amazon, Conforama or Maisons du Monde sometimes arrives with unnumbered parts and missing screws.
• Anchoring to the wall. Wardrobes, bookcases and tall chests of drawers must be anchored. On plasterboard walls special fixings are needed and sometimes the studs have to be found.
• Low ceiling or tight space. A 236 cm PAX in a room with a 240 cm ceiling has to be built standing up, piece by piece, instead of lying down.
• Moving house. Dismantling and reassembling takes longer than building new, because the wooden dowels and cam locks have already been worked.
• Kitchens. Levelling units, cutting the worktop and adjusting doors is a day or two of work; the taps and dishwasher are connected by our plumber in the same visit.
• Access. A block without a lift in El Carmen or Carolinas, or a tower flat in Benidorm with a small lift where the boxes go up one at a time.
• Quantity. Furnishing a whole rental flat is charged at the day rate, cheaper than adding up the items.

What the price includes and what it does not

Included: travel, full assembly according to the instructions, levelling against the floor, adjusting doors and drawers, anchoring to the wall with fixings suited to your wall type, positioning the furniture where you want it and taking the cardboard and plastic to the recycling bins. 6-month written guarantee on the assembly.

Not included: collecting the furniture from the shop (we can do it with our van at a separate price), parts missing from the box, worktop cut-outs for sinks in kitchens (quoted separately) or electrical connections for ovens and hobs, which need a licensed installer. If a part arrives broken, we assemble everything else and come back without a travel charge when you have the replacement from IKEA.

Real examples with the total

Rental flat in Patraix (Valencia): MALM bed with 2 drawers, 2 bedside tables, 2-door PAX wardrobe and a BILLY. Two assemblers, 3.5 hours. Wardrobe and bookcase anchored to a brick wall. Total: €240, IVA included, cardboard taken away.

7-unit METOD kitchen in a bungalow in Torrevieja (Aguas Nuevas). Units assembled, levelled, doors, plinth and laminate worktop cut for the sink. A day and a half. Total: €520 plus €65 for the sink and tap installation by our plumber.

House move in Alicante, from Carolinas to Playa de San Juan: dismantle and reassemble a PAX with 3 sliding doors and an ottoman bed. 4 hours over two visits. Total: €165.

How to save money and which offers to avoid

On Wallapop and Milanuncios there are assemblers at €15-20 an hour. They usually have no insurance, do not anchor the furniture to the wall and do not give an invoice; an unanchored wardrobe is the most common household accident with small children. IKEA's official service through TaskRabbit starts at around €23 but the final price climbs with each item and same-day availability is not guaranteed in Torrevieja or Benidorm.

To pay less without losing the guarantee:

• Send us the PDF of your IKEA order or a photo of the labels: we give a fixed price per item, with no surprises on hours.
• Group all the furniture into one visit; the second hour is charged lower than the first.
• Leave the boxes in the room they are going in, with the floor cleared.
• Check that all the boxes have arrived before booking us; a missing box means a second visit.
• If you are furnishing a whole flat to let, ask for the full-day rate (€220-280) instead of a price per item.

When it is worth assembling it yourself

A bedside table, a small KALLAX or a chair are built in half an hour with the Allen key in the box. Call an assembler when the piece is over 1.5 m tall, has more than 150 parts, is going on a plasterboard wall or when the time you save is worth more than €35.
