The carpentry jobs we do most and how we solve them

Door rubbing on the floor or not closing. This is the number one call for a door carpenter in the area. There are three causes and each has its fix. If the door has dropped, the hinges have worked loose or the screw holes in the frame have opened up: we pack them with dowels and glue, replace the screws and square up the leaf. If you have had new flooring laid (laminate or tiles over the old floor), the bottom of the door needs taking down by 1-2 cm with an electric planer, with the door off its hinges and without splintering the edge. And if the door swells in winter, typical of villas in Jávea, Dénia and Altea with solid wood doors and sea air, we plane the edge and seal it. Sliding wardrobe door off its track. The sliding doors of built-in wardrobes and PAX units come off when a nylon wheel breaks or the top track goes out of line. We replace the wheels (we carry a range for standard aluminium tracks), rehang the door and adjust the height so it does not rub. Hinges, handles and knobs. Replacing three hinges on an interior door costs €50-90 with the hinges included; we also fit rosette handles, knobs, interior door locks and bathroom privacy bolts. On older doors in the old towns of Altea, Villajoyosa or Alcoy the hinges are pin-type and the recess has to be reworked with a chisel; screwing them on is not enough.

Fitting interior doors. We hang new doors in an existing sub-frame or replace the leaf and frame complete, with architraves, handle and lock. Labour is €90-150 per door, not counting the door itself, which you can buy at Leroy Merlin or Bricodepot or we can bring. We plane and trim doors after new flooring goes in throughout a home, often all eight doors in a morning.

Laminate flooring and skirting. We lay click laminate (AC4 or AC5 for hallways and kitchens) over underlay, with expansion gaps and threshold profiles, at €10-15 per m² labour. We fit wooden or lacquered MDF skirting, mitred at the corners and fixed with pins or adhesive depending on the wall.

How our carpenter works

The same process for a half-hour adjustment as for 40 m² of flooring.

• 1. Photo on WhatsApp. A photo of the door closed (where it rubs), the hinge or the sliding door track, plus a rough measurement. For flooring, the square metres and a photo of the current floor. From that we know what to bring and how long it will take.
• 2. Fixed price. We send you a firm price in writing. If you accept it, the call-out is included; if you end up not going ahead, it is €25 in Valencia or Alicante city or €35 elsewhere in our area. If we find something different once we take things apart (a rotten frame, a twisted sub-frame), we stop and talk it through.
• 3. Visit within 24 hours, payment on completion. For door adjustments and sliding doors we usually have a slot the same day or the next; for new doors and flooring, within 3-7 days. You pay at the end in cash, by card, Bizum or bank transfer, with an invoice including IVA (VAT) and a 6-month written guarantee on labour. We sweep up the shavings and take the offcuts away.

What affects the carpenter's price

The first thing is whether the door has to come off. Tightening hinges and squaring up a leaf takes 30 minutes; taking it off, planing it on the floor and rehanging it takes an hour, which is why an adjustment runs from €40 to €70. The second is materials: a basic 100 mm hinge costs €2, a good brass one €8, and handles go from €10 to €60 depending on the design.

The third is the wood and the age. Hollow interior doors from the 80s to the 2000s are light and easy; solid pine or mobila doors in village houses weigh 40 kg and need two people and heavier tools. The fourth is the number of units: trimming one door costs €40-70, but the eight doors in a flat after new flooring work out at considerably less per door because the call-out and tool set-up happen once.

For flooring and skirting the price is per m² and per linear metre, and depends on whether the old floor has to come up, on the cuts (narrow hallways, radiators, doorways) and on the transition profiles. When the job is bigger than it looks

A door that sticks can be a symptom of something else. If several doors in the house are rubbing at once, and there are cracks above the frames too, the building has settled and planing the doors is a sticking plaster; we tell you so and recommend a surveyor before you spend money. If the frame is rotten at the bottom (very common in bathrooms and in damp ground-floor homes in Santa Pola or Guardamar), new hinges will not help: the damaged section has to be cut out and new timber spliced in, or the whole frame replaced.

Wardrobes are similar. If the sliding door came off because the top of the wardrobe has sagged under the weight, refitting the wheel lasts a week; the top needs reinforcing or a profile fitting. We make simple made-to-measure shelves and cupboards (a built-in wardrobe from melamine boards, shelves in an alcove, an overhead cupboard), but a designer fitted-wardrobe carpenter, with lacquered finishes and special hardware, is a different trade and we pass you a cabinet maker we trust.

And there are clear limits: we do not touch reinforced doors or front door locks (that is for our locksmith), we do not build timber structures, pergolas or roofs that need a licence, and we do not assemble flat-pack furniture, which is the job of our furniture fitter.
