The fly screen problems we fix most on the coast

Salt air and sun punish fly screens harder than anything else in the house. In the beachfront flats of San Juan, Albufereta or Poblats Marítims the nylon rollers on sliding screens lose their bearings after three or four summers and the panel starts to rub and jump out of its track. We fix it by replacing the full set of rollers with stainless steel axle rollers and adjusting the height with the screws in the profile, without taking the window out.

Mesh is the second fault. Standard fibreglass mesh tears on a cat's claw or a football, or simply rots along the edge after years of sun. We replace the mesh in the same aluminium frame with new rubber spline; if there are cats in the house, we fit reinforced pet screen that stands up to claws and teeth.

The third typical case is the opening that has never had a fly screen because the window does not allow it: tilt-and-turn windows, terrace doors that open inwards, 1980s aluminium windows with no free track. Here we suggest a roller fly screen with a 40 mm cassette, or a pleated screen for large openings, and if the comunidad (residents' association) does not allow drilling, a fixed clip-on or magnetic screen. You can see every option in our guide to types of fly screens.

Lastly, roller screens that stop halfway or fly up with a bang. It is almost always the spring in the tube that has lost tension, or the brush strips in the side guides clogged with dust and salt. We retension the spring, clean the guides and replace the brake if the model has one. If the tube is broken, replacing the whole unit usually makes more sense.

How we work with fly screens

  • Send us a photo on WhatsApp of the window from inside and outside, with the approximate size of the opening. From that we tell you which type of screen fits and give you a fixed price per unit or for the whole flat.
  • We come to measure and confirm the price. For new installations we take exact measurements in a short visit (in Valencia and Alicante, the same day or the next) and manufacture in 3-5 working days. For repairs we carry mesh, rollers and seals in the van and fix it in that same visit.
  • We fit, clean up and you pay on completion. Cash, card, Bizum or bank transfer, with an invoice including IVA (VAT). You get a 6-month written guarantee on labour and the manufacturer's warranty on profiles, mesh and mechanisms.

What changes the price of a made-to-measure fly screen

The type of screen carries the most weight. A sliding screen for an aluminium window with a free track is the cheapest option. A roller screen costs almost double because it has a cassette, a spring and side guides, and a pleated screen is the dearest because it is made for openings of two or three metres and folds concertina-style along a floor track. For concrete figures, see our fly screen prices page.

  • Size of the opening: above 1.5 m wide or 2.2 m high the profile has to be reinforced or you move to a pleated screen.
  • Aluminium colour: white and silver are in stock; bronze anodised, a RAL colour matched to the window frames or wood effect add 10-20% and a day or so to the lead time.
  • Type of mesh: standard fibreglass, reinforced pet mesh, pollen mesh or high-visibility mesh.
  • Number of units: from four fly screens in the same home we lower the price per unit because the journey and the measuring visit are shared.
  • Condition of the window: if the track is distorted or the guide profile is missing, an auxiliary guide has to be fitted.
  • Working height: outside windows on top floors or facades with no access from inside need a ladder or a platform.

When the fly screen is not the problem

Sometimes we are called to replace a fly screen that will not slide and find on arrival that it is the window frame that has gone: the top track has opened up, the window sash is rubbing and the fly screen has no room. In that case fitting a new one achieves nothing. We adjust the window first, replace the wheels on the aluminium sash if needed, and then fit the fly screen. The same goes for terrace doors with the threshold full of sand and limescale: it has to be cleaned, and sometimes the bottom guide replaced, before anything goes in.

Another frequent case is glazed terraces with three or four sliding glass panels. A standard fly screen does not cover the whole opening and a two-panel sliding screen door or a pleated screen with a floor profile has to be made. It is a half-day job and the price goes up, but it is the only solution that stands up to the levante wind. If you also need roller shutters adjusted or the terrace sealed, we combine it in a handyman by the hour visit so you do not pay two call-outs.

Where we fit fly screens

We work with our own fitters in Valencia city and its metropolitan area (Mislata, Burjassot, Paterna, Torrent, Alboraya) and in Alicante, San Vicente, El Campello and Santa Pola. There are dedicated pages for fly screens in Valencia, fly screens in Alicante, fly screens in Elche and fly screens in Dénia, with the neighbourhoods, housing types and lead times for each area.

In the Vega Baja we cover Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Guardamar and Pilar de la Horadada from our Torrevieja team, and in the Marina Baixa, Benidorm, Altea, La Nucía and Alfaz del Pi from Benidorm. In Jávea, Calpe and Moraira we group measuring visits by day so there is no extra call-out. If you want to try a solution without a fitter first, read our guide to no-drill fly screens and then let us know.

Guides and tips

Frequently asked questions

How long does a made-to-measure fly screen take to make?

Between 3 and 5 working days from when we measure, for sliding and roller screens in white or silver. Pleated screens and special colours take 7-10 days. Repairs (mesh, rollers, seals) are done in the same visit because we carry the materials with us.

Can I buy the fly screen at Leroy Merlin and have you just fit it?

Yes. We fit fly screens bought at Leroy Merlin, Bricodepot or online for €25-45 per unit, depending on the type. We suggest sending us a photo of the window before buying, to check that the measurements and the fixing system suit it, because cut-to-size kits do not work in every opening.

Which fly screen stands up best to salt air on the seafront?

A sliding or roller screen with a powder-coated aluminium profile, stainless steel rollers and PVC-coated fibreglass mesh. Avoid nylon rollers on an iron axle and galvanised screws, which rust within two summers. Rinsing the mesh with fresh water once a month makes it last far longer.

Do you have fly screens for tilt-and-turn windows?

Yes. The usual answer is a vertical roller screen fitted outside the frame, which lets the window open and tilt without touching the mesh. If the facade cannot be drilled, we fit a fixed screen with a clip-on frame over the window profile, removable for cleaning.

How much does it cost to replace just the mesh?

Between €25 and €45 per unit, including new fibreglass mesh, rubber spline and labour. With reinforced pet mesh the price rises by about €10-15 per panel. From four meshes in the same home we apply a batch price.

What guarantee do fitted fly screens carry?

Six months in writing on the fitting and repairs, plus the manufacturer's warranty on profiles and mechanisms, which is usually two years. If a new fly screen jumps its track or stops sliding within that time, we come back at no charge.
