How to hang a ceiling light (and when not to do it yourself)

Hanging a ceiling light in place of another one is a 30-minute job if you cut the power at the consumer unit, identify the three wires correctly and fix the light to the ceiling with the right plug. It is not a job to do with the power cut only at the light switch, nor one to improvise on a plaster false ceiling. Here we explain how to install a ceiling light safely and in which cases you should not do it yourself. If you would rather we fitted it, in Valencia, Alicante and on the Costa Blanca replacing a ceiling light costs 35-60 €.

Quick answer

To hang a ceiling light: cut the power at the consumer unit (not just at the switch), check with a voltage tester that there is no current, note which wire is live (brown or black), neutral (blue) and earth (green and yellow), fix the bracket to the ceiling with suitable plugs, connect the wires in the connector block matching the colours, hang the light and restore the power. If the ceiling has no earth wire or the wires are not colour coded, call an electrician.

What you need

  • Non-contact voltage tester or a tester screwdriver (Stanley, Fluke, or the Leroy Merlin one for 10-15 €)
  • Insulated electrician's screwdrivers, flat and Phillips
  • Wire strippers or side cutters
  • Drill with a 6 mm bit (no hammer action in plaster and plasterboard)
  • A stable stepladder, not a chair
  • Head torch
  • New light with its ceiling rose, cable and connector block
  • Wago 221 lever connectors or a 2.5 mm terminal strip (more reliable than the plastic block that comes with the light)
  • Fischer SX 6 plugs for a concrete slab, Fischer Duotec or spring toggles for plasterboard, plaster plugs or a metal anchor for a plaster false ceiling
  • Ceiling hook or the light's bracket
  • Insulating tape

Step by step

  1. 1

Cut the power at the consumer unit

Switch off the main switch or the MCB for the lighting circuit at the flat's consumer unit. Turning the light off at the wall switch is not enough: in many older installations the switch breaks the neutral and the live still reaches the light. Tape a note to the consumer unit so nobody switches it back on.

  2. 2

    Check there is no voltage

Flick the room's light switch on: if the old light does not come on, that is a good sign. Bring the voltage tester up to the ceiling wires: it must not beep or light up. If it does, go back to the consumer unit and switch off the main. Do not continue without this check.

  3. 3

Take down the old light and photograph the wires

Support the light, loosen the ceiling rose or bracket and take a photo of how the wires are connected before you disconnect anything. Normally: brown or black is live, blue is neutral, green and yellow is earth. In installations from before 1973 the wires may all be the same colour or there may be no earth: in that case, stop here and call an electrician.

  4. 4

Check the condition of the wires

If the insulation is brittle, bare or blackened by heat, do not connect a new light to it. If the wires are sound, strip 10 mm from each end with the wire strippers and check there are no loose copper strands.

  5. 5

Fix the bracket to the ceiling

Work out what the ceiling is: concrete slab (sounds solid), plaster false ceiling (hollow, 1-2 cm of plaster) or plasterboard. Drill without hammer action in plaster and plasterboard. Use Fischer SX 6 plugs in concrete, spring toggles or Duotec in plasterboard and specific plaster plugs in a false ceiling. A light over 3-4 kg on a plaster ceiling needs anchoring to the slab with a threaded rod, not to the false ceiling.

  6. 6

    Connect the wires

Join each ceiling wire to the light wire of the same colour in a Wago 221 connector or a terminal strip: live to brown, neutral to blue, earth to green and yellow. If the light is Class II (no earth, with the double-square symbol), isolate the ceiling earth wire in a connector on its own; do not cut it. Check that no copper shows outside the connectors.

  7. 7

Hang the light and tuck the connections away

Hang the light from the hook or screw the base to the bracket, tuck the connectors inside the ceiling rose so that the weight hangs from the mechanical fixing and never from the wires, and close the rose.

  8. 8

    Restore the power and test

Switch the MCB back on at the consumer unit and turn the light on at the wall switch. If the MCB or the RCD trips, switch off, cut the main and check the connections: almost always a copper strand touching another. If it trips again, do not persist: electrician.

Which lights you can hang yourself and which you cannot

Spanish law reserves electrical installation work (new lighting points, circuits, consumer units, the boletín certificate) for authorised installers. Replacing one light fitting with another at the same lighting point, using the existing wires, is maintenance and can be done by a private individual or a handyman. The difference is whether you touch the installation or only what hangs from it.

We replace pendant lights, flush fittings, wall lights and ceiling fans with lights at existing lighting points. We do not create new lighting points, do not move junction boxes, do not run cable across the ceiling and do not touch the consumer unit. For that we work with authorised electricians who issue the boletín (electrical certificate).

Common mistakes when installing a ceiling light

  • Cutting the power only at the switch. The live may still be reaching the light. Always at the consumer unit, and always check with the tester.
  • Letting the weight hang from the wires. Connector blocks are not hooks. The weight goes on the mechanical fixing; the wires hang loose inside the rose.
  • Drilling a plaster false ceiling with hammer action. It cracks or breaks it. And hanging 5 kg from a 1.5 cm plaster board ends with the light and a chunk of ceiling on the floor.
  • Twisting wires together and wrapping them in insulating tape. The number one cause of sparks and a burning smell months later. Connector block or Wago, always.
  • Connecting the earth to a wire that is not earth. If the colours are not clear, do not guess.
  • Using bulbs more powerful than the rating. Fabric shades and enclosed fittings have a heat limit; with LED it is hard to exceed, but with halogens it is not.

When to call a professional

Call if the ceiling has no earth wire or the wires are all the same, if the insulation is brittle, if the light weighs more than 4-5 kg and the ceiling is plaster or plasterboard, if the light goes in a bathroom near the shower, if the MCB trips when you connect it, or if you simply do not have a voltage tester and a ladder. Every year there are accidents from ladder falls and shocks on half-hour jobs.

At Manitas Costa, replacing a ceiling light costs 35-60 € at an existing lighting point, including the right ceiling fixing, Wago connectors and testing. Several lights in the same visit are quoted by the hour: 35-45 € for the first hour and 28-35 € for each following hour. Fixed price on WhatsApp from a photo of the ceiling and the light, 6-month written guarantee.

Safety: consumer unit, earth and coastal ceilings

Two things are not negotiable. First: the power is cut at the consumer unit, never at the switch, and checked with a tester before touching a wire. Second: no new wiring. If the lighting point is not where you want it, the answer is an electrician, not a cable clipped across the ceiling.

In homes from the 60s to 80s in Valencia, Alicante and Benidorm it is common to find lighting points with no earth and fabric-covered wires. Many modern lights are Class II (double insulated) and work without an earth, but if the cable is deteriorated or the light is metal and Class I, that circuit needs updating, and that is a job that requires a boletín.

The plaster false ceilings in beach apartments usually have 1-2 cm of plaster with an air gap behind. A light fitting (up to 2-3 kg) can be fixed with plaster plugs; a large light, a ceiling fan or a chandelier need a threaded rod up to the concrete slab. If you do not know what is behind the ceiling, a small inspection hole with the power off will tell you. And if the previous light left holes on show, in how to fill holes in a wall we explain how to repair them on ceilings too.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a handyman charge to hang a ceiling light?

Replacing a light at an existing lighting point costs 35-60 €, with the ceiling fixing, connectors and a check that everything works. Several lights in one visit go by the hour: 35-45 € for the first and 28-35 € for each following hour. Fixed price before starting and an invoice with IVA (VAT).

Can a handyman install a ceiling light or does it have to be an electrician?

Replacing a light at a lighting point that already exists is maintenance and a handyman does it. Creating a new point, moving the existing one, adding a switch or changing wiring is electrical installation work and is done by an authorised electrician with a boletín. We only replace; for anything else we pass you on to an electrician.

What do I do if there are only two wires in the ceiling and no earth?

If the light is Class II (double-square symbol on the label), it can be connected without an earth. If it is metal and Class I, do not connect it without an earth: there is a risk of shock if the insulation fails. In that case it is worth having an electrician check the circuit.

How do I hang a heavy light on a plaster ceiling?

Not to the plaster. Plaster boards take 2-3 kg with specific plugs. For a chandelier, a fan or anything over 4-5 kg you have to anchor to the concrete slab with a threaded rod that passes through the false ceiling. We do it in the same visit if we know the weight beforehand.

The RCD tripped when I connected the light, what do I do?

Switch off the main, take the light down and check the connectors: almost always a copper strand touching another or the earth. Redo the connections with Wago connectors, with no copper showing. If it trips again with the light disconnected, the problem is in the installation and you need an electrician.
