Handyman prices by the hour and per job

We have two ways of charging and you choose the one that suits you. By the hour, when the list is long or it is not clear how long each thing will take: you pay the actual time from when we walk in to when we leave. Per job, at a fixed price, when it is one specific task and we can see it in the photo. Materials are extra in both cases, at hardware-shop price and with the receipt.

Handyman prices by town

In central Valencia the first hour is 10-15 % above Alicante because of parking and travel time in Ruzafa, El Carmen or Benimaclet. In Torrevieja and Benidorm we add up to 10 % when the property is in an urbanisation well away from the centre. What changes a handyman's price

  • Length of the visit. The longer the list, the cheaper the hour. A single 20-minute job pays the whole first hour; four jobs in two and a half hours work out at under €35 an hour.
  • Area and access. A town-centre property with parking nearby sits at the bottom of the range; an urbanisation 20 km out or a fifth-floor flat with no lift, at the top.
  • Urgency. A call-out within the hour is charged at the top of the range; a list for next week, at the bottom. Outside 8am-9pm we only attend locksmith and drain emergencies, with a surcharge.
  • Materials. What we carry in the van (silicone, rawlplugs, tap cartridges, flexi hoses, shutter strap, light bulbs) is charged with the receipt. Anything specific you buy yourself or we bring it at shop price.
  • Type of work. Plumbing and locksmith jobs have their own fixed rates, sometimes higher than the handyman hour because they involve special tools and parts; we tell you beforehand.
  • Admin. Coordinating with tenants, collecting keys from an agency, taking an IKEA delivery or sending a photo report to an owner abroad is included, not charged separately.
  • Two people. Moving a wardrobe, mounting a 75-inch TV or fitting an awning needs two handymen; the second person is charged at €25-30 an hour.

What the rate includes and what it does not

Included: travel within the town if you accept the quote, power and hand tools, basic low-value consumables (screws, standard rawlplugs, tape, PTFE), tidying up at the end, an invoice with IVA and a 6-month written guarantee on the labour. It also includes diagnosis: if something on the list turns out to be a bigger job, we tell you without charging for the time spent looking at it.

Not included: specific materials (taps, brackets, mechanisms, lights, furniture), parts that have to be ordered, rubble collection beyond two bags, work that requires a licence (new electrical installation, gas, air conditioning with refrigerant) and works needing a permit. If you do not accept the quote after the visit, we charge the call-out only: €25 in Valencia and Alicante city, €35 elsewhere.

Three real lists with the total

  • Flat in Carolinas, Alicante: three things. Redo the bath silicone, replace the bedroom shutter strap and hang a 15 kg IKEA mirror. Two and a half hours: first hour €40 plus 1.5 hours at €30 = €85, plus anti-mould silicone and shutter strap, €12. Total: €97 including IVA in one visit.
  • Flat in Torrevieja (La Mata) before the season: half a day. Flush limescaled taps, replace two weeping flexi hoses, adjust three doors that rub, fix the shower rail, change four bulbs and the doorbell battery, check shutters and awning, send photos to the owner in Norway. Half day €140 plus materials €35. Total: €175 including IVA.
  • Flat in Ruzafa, Valencia, after a move: full day. Assemble and anchor two bookcases, mount a 55-inch TV with cable trunking, fit four curtain poles, hang twelve pictures, connect the washing machine and dishwasher, replace three broken sockets, adjust the bathroom door. Full day €260 plus materials €48. Total: €308 including IVA, two people over a morning and an afternoon.

How to avoid the traps in "handyman from €15 an hour" adverts

On the listings sites and on Google you will see handymen at €15 or €20 an hour. What the advert does not say: a two- or three-hour minimum, a €20-30 call-out on top, a "tool supplement", materials charged at twice the hardware-shop price and, frequently, no invoice and no insurance. In the end a one-hour visit comes to €70-90, double what was advertised. And if they crack a tile or drill through a pipe, there is nobody to claim against.

  • Ask for the total price by WhatsApp with the list of jobs: what the first hour costs, the following hours, the travel and whether there is a minimum. We put it in writing in the message.
  • Ask whether they issue an invoice with IVA and carry public liability insurance. If they hesitate, they do not.
  • Check there is a company behind it (name, NIF tax number, website) and not just a number in a classified ad.
  • Put everything outstanding into one visit: that is the real way to save, because you pay the first hour only once.
  • Send photos beforehand. A serious handyman will tell you in advance what fits into the hour and what is a separate job.
  • Pay when the job is done, never before, and by a method that leaves a trace (card, Bizum, transfer) if there is no prior relationship.

When it is worth doing it yourself and when to call

Some things do not justify paying a handyman's first hour if you have a screwdriver and half an hour: changing a bulb, tightening a handle, putting a battery in the doorbell, adjusting a kitchen cupboard hinge with a Phillips screwdriver, hanging a light picture. Our guide to what a handyman does separates what you can do yourself from what is worth booking.

You can also have a go, with a guide, at the dripping tap (replacing a mixer cartridge costs €10-15 and 30 minutes), at the shutter strap if the box is accessible and at hanging pictures without drilling in a rental. Call when the list has more than three things, when water or electricity is involved, when something weighs more than 20 kg or when the flat is not yours and the owner wants an invoice and a guarantee. In those cases the handyman's hour costs less than a cracked tile or a lost weekend. For specific jobs you also have the prices of the plumber and the locksmith.

Guides and tips

Frequently asked questions

Does the handyman's hourly rate include IVA?

Yes. The €35-45 for the first hour and the €28-35 for the following hours include 21 % IVA, and we issue an invoice when the job is done with whatever details you give us: yours, the owner's or those of the agency managing the flat. Materials go on the same invoice with their IVA.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

Not if you accept the quote. The first hour already includes the trip within Valencia, Alicante, Torrevieja and Benidorm and their surrounding areas. We only charge a call-out (€25 in the city, €35 in the rest of the Costa Blanca) if we come out and you decide not to have any work done. In the Marina Alta the first hour sits at the top of the range because of the distance.

Is there a surcharge for nights, weekends or public holidays?

Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 9pm carry no surcharge; many handyman visits happen at the weekend because that is when you are at home. Outside those hours and on public holidays we only go out for locksmith and drain emergencies, with the surcharge shown on their rate cards. A handyman does not work at night.

How do I pay the handyman?

When the job is done, in cash, by card, Bizum or bank transfer, with an invoice on the spot. For owners abroad we accept a transfer or Bizum the same day after sending photos of the work. We do not ask for a deposit or payment in advance, except for specific materials over €100 that you ask us to buy.

How are the hours counted?

From when we enter the property to when we leave, in half-hour blocks after the first hour. If we go to buy materials halfway through, that time is not charged when the material was on the list; if it is something that comes up on the day, we agree it before going out for it.

Is it cheaper by the hour or at a fixed price?

For a specific job we can see in the photo, the fixed price: you know the total and we take the risk of it turning awkward. For long lists or when we do not know what we will find, by the hour works out better, because you only pay the actual time. We recommend whichever option we think is cheaper in each case.

What happens if the handyman breaks something?

We carry public liability insurance and we repair or replace it at no cost. It is one of the reasons not to hire without an invoice: a tile cracked while drilling or a flexi hose that bursts through poor installation can cost more than the whole visit. Within the six-month written guarantee, any job that fails we redo for free.
