Awnings in Altea: typical faults in the town and in the villas

In the Casco Antiguo and Altea la Vella awnings sit over small townhouse terraces, anchored to old rubble-stone walls. The most common call is a bracket that has worked loose from the wall and an awning that wobbles; we re-anchor it with chemical resin and, if the wall cannot take the load, we propose a vertical awning or an exterior blind, which is lighter. Fabric replacement on these 2 to 3 metre awnings costs 150-300 €.

In Altea Hills and Sierra Altea the awnings are large and motorised, and the wind that comes down off the Mascarat is the enemy. We see collapsed arms and torn fabric on awnings that were left out. We replace the arm for 90-160 € and recommend a wind sensor on awnings over 5 metres, so they retract on their own when the owner is away.

The third call is the unresponsive motor in villas belonging to Norwegian and Dutch residents who come back in spring. It is usually programming lost after a power cut or a remote with flat batteries; we reprogram it before talking about a new motor. If it does need replacing, we fit a tubular motor with remote for 250-420 €.

Made-to-measure awning fitting in Altea

On the terraces of the Casco Antiguo access is on foot up narrow stairs and the awning has to come in through the house. We measure the opening and choose an awning that will go up the staircase or can be assembled in pieces. For balconies in the Puerto and Cap Negret the comunidad de vecinos (residents' association) usually specifies colour and model; we fit it for 120-220 € labour.

In the villas of Altea Hills, Sierra Altea and La Olla the terraces are wide and the awning needs reinforced arms, a motor and ceiling or wall brackets depending on the structure. For pool gardens with no supporting wall, a 3x3 shade sail fitted costs 180-320 € and is anchored to posts and the facade with stainless steel tensioners.

When the wall matters more than the awning

In Altea's old houses the problem is usually not the awning but what it hangs from. A stone wall with lime mortar will not hold an expansion bolt and the bracket ends up pulling out. Before fitting or re-anchoring we check the wall and, if needed, use chemical anchors or a spreader plate. If the wall is in poor condition, we say so and hang nothing until it is repaired.
