Jávea's doors: timber, damp and villas far from everything

The urbanisations of Jávea have the biggest and heaviest front doors on the whole coast: solid timber leaves over two metres tall, often iroko or treated pine, which swell in autumn and shrink in summer with the damp from the Montgó and the sea. When the leaf swells, the multipoint bolt no longer lines up with the keep, the owner pulls on the handle until the mechanism locks up, and then calls us. We open through the cylinder without touching the timber, and then it is a question of whether to adjust the keep or plane the door.

The second type of call comes from houses left empty between visits. British and German owners who come four times a year and find the cylinder seized, the gate lock rusted or the side-door bolt thrown by the gardener. And the third, the usual one: doors slammed shut in the flats of the Arenal and the Puerto, keys snapped in the old town.
