The locksmith jobs we attend most and how we solve them
Door slammed shut. The most common call: you pop out to the bins, the draught slams the door and the keys are inside. If the door is only on the latch (you have not turned the key), we open it with a shim or picks in a few minutes without touching the cylinder. Lost or stolen keys. We open the door and, in the same visit, replace the bombín (lock cylinder) with a new one and its keys. If the keys were stolen together with documents showing your address, we recommend an anti-bump, anti-pick cylinder (Tesa TX80, Ezcurra SEA, Mottura Champions) with a security card. Labour is €40-60 and a security cylinder starts at €35.
Jammed lock or cylinder that will not turn. In seafront flats in Alicante, Santa Pola or Torrevieja, salt and dust corrode the inside of the cylinder. We start with dry graphite lubricant and controlled extraction; if a pin spring has failed, the cylinder is replaced. Key snapped in the lock. If a piece is sticking out, do not try to grab it with pliers: you push it further in. We use key extractors and, if the fragment is deep, remove the cylinder. Removing a broken key costs €40-70. There is a guide to removing a broken key if you want to try carefully first.
Reinforced or armoured door. The security doors in Benidorm's tower blocks and in renovated flats in Valencia have a cylinder with a security escutcheon and a multi-point lock. Changing the cylinder on a reinforced door means measuring it accurately (inside and outside) and working around the escutcheon; opening a reinforced door costs €90-180 depending on the system.
How our locksmith works: photo, fixed price and visit
We always work in the same order so there are no surprises on the invoice.
- 1. Photo on WhatsApp. Send us a photo of the lock (the street side) and the door, tell us the address and whether it is a flat or a villa. From that we know whether it is a simple opening, a reinforced door or a full lock replacement.
- 2. Fixed price. We reply with a firm price in writing. If you accept it, there is no call-out fee. If you would rather we came to look and then decide not to go ahead, the call-out is €25 in Valencia or Alicante city and €35 elsewhere in our area.
- 3. Same-day visit. For emergencies we leave straight away; for planned lock changes we usually have a slot within 24 hours. You pay on completion (cash, card, Bizum or bank transfer), with an invoice including IVA (VAT) and a 6-month written guarantee on labour.
What affects a locksmith's price
The price of a door opening depends above all on the time of day and the type of door. Between 8am and 9pm, Monday to Sunday, a slammed door costs €60-90; at night or on a bank holiday, €90-150. That is the only time we apply a surcharge, and we tell you before setting off, not on arrival.
The second factor is the state of the lock. A door that is only on the latch opens without damaging anything; one locked from inside or double-locked may mean breaking the cylinder, and then a new cylinder is added. An honest 24-hour locksmith explains this difference before touching the door, not afterwards.
The third is the hardware you choose: a basic cylinder costs €20-35, an anti-bump one with a dimple key €35-70, and a complete mortice or rim lock takes the total to €80-150 plus the lock itself. When the job is more than it looks
There are three situations that turn a 15-minute opening into an hour's work. The first is a key left in the lock inside: if someone has left the key in the cylinder from the inside, a standard cylinder will not accept another key from outside; we need a push technique or, if the cylinder is old, to replace it. The second is a double-locked reinforced door: there is no latch opening there and we have to work on the cylinder, with a protective escutcheon on many doors from the 2000s.
The third is very much a Costa Blanca thing: holiday-let locks with master-keyed systems or hotel-style electronic locks. In Benidorm, Calpe and Orihuela Costa we work with holiday-let managers who need the cylinder changed between guests, or a Nuki, Yale or Tedee smart lock fitted so they can stop handing over physical keys. How long does an emergency locksmith take to arrive?
In Valencia, Alicante, Torrevieja and Benidorm we arrive in 20-45 minutes between 8am and 9pm. In Dénia, Jávea, Calpe and Altea, 30-60 minutes. At night it can be a little longer because the on-call locksmith sets off from home; we give you a specific time on WhatsApp before you confirm.
Can you open the door without breaking the lock?
If the door has slammed shut (latch only), yes, in more than 90% of cases. If it is locked or double-locked, it depends on the cylinder: basic ones can be picked, security ones often have to be broken and replaced. We tell you from the photo, before coming out.
How much does it cost to change the lock cylinder?
Labour is €40-60 and the cylinder is extra: from €20 for a standard one and from €35 for an anti-bump cylinder with a security card. On reinforced doors the cylinder has to be measured precisely and sometimes the escutcheon changed too, which can add €20-40. You always get the new keys sealed in their packet.
What do I need to show you before you open the door?
A document proving you live there or own the property: ID with the address, a tenancy agreement, a recent utility bill or, if the home belongs to a relative, a call with them. For holiday lets we ask for the booking confirmation or the manager's contact. Without that we do not open.
Is there a guarantee on a lock change?
Yes. Labour carries a 6-month written guarantee on the invoice. The cylinder or lock carries the manufacturer's warranty, normally 2 years for Tesa, Ezcurra or Mottura. If a cylinder we fitted starts to fail within that time, we come back at no charge.
Why do some locksmiths advertise from €29 when you charge €60-90?
That €29 is usually just the call-out; then the opening, the night surcharge and a cylinder you did not need get added, and the bill passes €200. We give a fixed price on WhatsApp with everything included. If the job turns out different from what you told us when we arrive, we explain before touching anything.
Do you charge extra at night or on Sundays?
On Sundays and bank holidays between 8am and 9pm there is no surcharge: a door opening still costs €60-90. Outside those hours, at night or on a bank holiday, an opening costs €90-150 for the on-call locksmith. In every case you can pay in cash, by card, Bizum or bank transfer and you receive an invoice.
