How much does a bath-to-shower conversion cost in 2026?

Replacing a bath with a shower tray costs between €1,100 and €2,400 in Valencia, Alicante and on the Costa Blanca, including the building work, a resin tray, a new waste and partial retiling. We say it plainly: that building work is done by a partner renovation company we work with; we take care of the small part, which is the shower screen, the tap, the sealing and the finishing, and we coordinate the whole thing if you are not here.

Quick answer

In 2026, converting a bath to a shower tray costs €1,100-2,400 in Valencia and Alicante: bath removed, new waste, resin tray, the gap retiled and finished. That price is quoted by our partner renovation company. Our part is charged separately at a fixed price: fitting the shower screen €90-170, replacing the tap €45-80, sealing and regrouting €40-70.

Bath to shower: price of the building work and the finishing

Taking out a bath and putting in a shower tray is building work: chipping out, moving the waste, levelling the floor, waterproofing and tiling. A handyman does not do that and neither do we. We work with one renovation company in Alicante and another in Valencia who do this conversion in 3-5 days and answer for it with their own insurance and their own invoice.

What we do ourselves, and the reason this page is on our website, is what comes after or around the building work: removing the old shower screen, fitting the new one, swapping the tap for a thermostatic one, sealing, regrouting and repairing any tile that was disturbed. And when the owner lives abroad, handling keys, taking delivery of materials and sending photos of each stage. In the table, what the partner quotes is marked as a guide; our part is a fixed price.

Price by town

The building work costs more in central Valencia: 1960s-80s blocks without a lift, fibre-cement downpipes that call for extra care with the new waste, and rubble that goes down the stairs in sacks. In Alicante the base rate applies. In Torrevieja and Benidorm the price is similar to Alicante, with a little more in bungalows in outlying urbanisations or in tower blocks where the comunidad de vecinos (residents' association) restricts working hours.

What changes the price of a bath-to-shower conversion

Between €1,100 and €2,400 there is a lot of room. This is what moves the price up or down, according to what the partner tells us with each quote:

  • Shower tray. Slate-effect resin €180-400; ceramic €90-200; made to measure or ultra-slim with a linear drain, more. Resin is the usual choice in rental flats because of its grip.
  • Waste. If the bath trap lines up with the tray's, the work is short; if the waste has to be moved 50 cm across the floor, more flooring comes up.
  • Tiling. Just the bath recess (the norm) or the whole wall up to the ceiling. Finding a tile identical to the one from 1985 is almost impossible, which is why many people go for a band in a different colour.
  • Condition of the wall and floor. Old damp behind the bath, hollow plaster or lead pipes that need replacing.
  • Shower screen. Front, corner or fixed panel, €150 to €600 in materials, plus our fixed-price fitting.
  • Taps. Keep the existing tap, fit a thermostatic one (€120-250 in materials) or go for a concealed one, which is building work again.
  • Access. No lift, no parking, a comunidad that only allows work from 9am to 2pm.
  • Permit. Minor bathroom works need a declaración responsable (responsible declaration) at the town hall; the fee ranges from €30 to €150 depending on the municipality and the partner handles it.

What the price includes and what it does not

The partner's quote includes removing the bath and taking it to the punto limpio (recycling centre), a new waste and trap, levelling and preparing the base, setting the tray, tiling the recess, finishing with silicone and cleaning up. Their invoice carries their guarantee and their public liability insurance. Our part (screen, tap, sealing, regrouting, loose tiles) comes with our invoice and our 6-month written guarantee.

It does not include the finishing materials you choose (tray, tiles, screen, tap), which you buy at Leroy Merlin, Bricodepot or a bathroom showroom, or which the partner buys and invoices with the receipt. Nor does it include new electrical installation or replacing the gas water heater; both need a licensed installer. If the bathroom has active damp from a hidden leak, the partner quotes the repair separately before tiling.

Real examples with the total

1970s flat in Ruzafa (Valencia). Cast-iron bath removed, 140x70 resin tray, new waste, recess tiled with a grey band. Partner's work: €1,850, four days. Our part: front sliding screen €130, thermostatic tap €70 in labour, silicone €40. Customer's total: €2,090 plus materials (tray, screen, tap and tiles, €640).

Bungalow in Los Balcones (Torrevieja), owner in Belgium. Partner's work: €1,400, three days. We collected the keys from the agency, took delivery of the tray and the screen, fitted the corner screen (€150), replaced the tap (€60) and sent photos every evening. Coordination and property care: €45. Our total: €255.

Flat in Rincón de Loix (Benidorm), for holiday letting. Building work already done by the comunidad during a downpipe renovation, with the recess ready. We set the resin tray on the prepared base (3 hours of a builder, €110), fitted the screen (€120) and the tap (€60). Total: €290, in one morning.

How to save money and which offers to avoid

Adverts for a "bath to shower in 24 hours from €599" are usually an acrylic tray laid over the cut-down bath or over the recess without touching the waste or waterproofing. It works for a year; then the damp shows up in the flat below. Others quote without IVA, without a permit and without removing the bath, which stays on your landing. Always ask for an itemised quote, with the company identified and the IVA shown.

To really save:

  • Keep the waste where it is: choosing a tray whose drain lines up with the bath's saves €200-400 in building work.
  • Tile only the recess and use a band of different tile; hunting for the original tile costs more than the tile itself.
  • Buy the tray, screen and tap yourself when they are on offer; we tell you from a photo whether they fit before you pay.
  • Use the work as a chance to regrout the rest of the bathroom and replace the silicone: the bathroom looks new for €150-300 more.
  • If the flat is let, ask for both invoices (building work and finishing): the expense is deductible against rental income.

What you can do yourself and when to call

The building work is not a DIY job: a badly moved waste is the number one cause of damp in the flat below. What you can do yourself, or leave to us at a fixed price, is what comes afterwards: fit the screen following the guide how to install a front sliding shower screen, replace the shower tap and seal the shower screen after 24 hours. If the work has left a tile damaged, see how to fill holes in tiles.

Send us a photo of the bathroom and the town. We tell you whether the partner covers your area, pass you their contact and fix our part at a set price: shower screen installation, plumber for the tap and small building works for regrouting and finishing. If you only want to know what the screen costs, it is on shower screen installation prices.

Guides and tips

Frequently asked questions

Does the price include IVA?

Our part (screen, tap, sealing, regrouting) includes 21 % IVA and comes with an invoice. The building work is invoiced by the renovation company; in homes over two years old the reduced 10 % rate can apply if materials do not exceed 40 % of the total, which they will tell you in their quote.

Do you charge anything for coordinating with the renovation company?

No. We pass you the contact, the partner visits and quotes on their own account. We only charge for what we do ourselves. If you want us to handle keys, take delivery of materials and send photos because you live abroad, we do it as property care, €45-80 for the duration of the work.

How long does a bath-to-shower conversion take?

The building work takes 3-5 working days: one day for demolition and the waste, one for the tray and base, one or two for tiling and one for finishing. Our screen and tap go in the morning after the tiling is finished, and 24 hours after sealing you can shower.

Is a permit needed?

Yes, a minor works permit via a declaración responsable at the town hall, which the partner handles. In Valencia, Alicante, Torrevieja and Benidorm the fee ranges from €30 to €150. Tell the comunidad too: many restrict working hours and the use of the lift for rubble.

How do I pay?

The building work is paid to the renovation company according to their quote, usually part at the start and the rest on completion. Our part is paid when our work is finished, in cash, by card, Bizum or bank transfer, with a separate invoice. Two invoices, two guarantees, no middlemen.

What guarantee is there?

The building work carries the renovation company's guarantee and insurance, which they set out in writing. Our screen, tap and sealing carry a 6-month written guarantee on the labour, and the materials the manufacturer's warranty. If water gets past the screen, we come back at no cost.

Can I carry on living at home during the work?

Yes, if you have a second bathroom or can manage 3-4 days without a shower. Dust and noise are concentrated on the first day. In holiday flats in Benidorm and Torrevieja the usual thing is to do it between bookings, in the low season, and we leave the bathroom ready for the next guest.
