Wooden doors in the Casco Antiguo and Altea la Vella
The village houses of the Casco Antiguo, on the streets climbing up to the church, have solid wooden doors with old rim locks, sometimes lever locks with big keys, and staircases so narrow there is room for one person and a tool bag. Turning up with a drill is not an option here: a door like that is worth more than any lock, and forcing it means wrecking something that cannot be replaced. We walk up from the car park with just what we need and open with picks, lever-lock skeleton keys or by working the bolt.
The second problem in the Casco Antiguo and Altea la Vella is timber that moves with the damp. In autumn the door swells, the bolt no longer meets the strike plate, the owner forces the key and the mechanism breaks. When that happens we repair the old lock if it can be saved, and if not, we fit a modern security rim lock, keeping the door and the exterior fittings.
There is one more case: the house that has been shut since summer. Locks that have not turned in months, interior bolts thrown, cylinders gone stiff. Between October and April that is half our calls in Altea.

Villas in Altea Hills, Sierra Altea and Mascarat
In the hillside urbanisations the work is different: security front doors with multipoint locks, entrance gates, garage and side doors, and Norwegian, Dutch and Russian owners who spend part of the year away. Openings on these villas are charged as security doors, 90-180 €, because they take more time and tooling. Cylinder changes are 40-60 € in labour plus the cylinder, the same as on any other door.
To owners flying in from Oslo or Moscow we suggest an anti-bump cylinder with a security card, so that copies are under their control and not the cleaning company's, and a security bolt on the side door, usually the weakest in the house. Why the 29 € locksmith is a bad deal in Altea
The advertised locksmith promising openings from 29 € works on volume: the sooner he opens, the sooner he gets paid, and the fastest way to open is to drill. On a reinforced door in Benidorm that is fixed with a new cylinder. On a wooden door in the Casco Antiguo of Altea it is fixed by a carpenter and several hundred euros, if it can be fixed at all. And the call-out, the night rate and the part you never asked for turn 29 € into 350.

It depends what you want. If it works and the house is not left empty for long spells, we repair it and keep it. If you want security, we fit a modern rim lock with an anti-bump cylinder without changing the door or the outside fittings, for 80-150 € in labour plus the lock. The old one can stay as decoration.
