The price depends above all on the system. Sliding is the cheapest and stands up to salt air best if it has powder-coated aluminium frames; roller is the most convenient on windows opened every day; pleated is the only sensible option on terrace doors over 2 metres. Fly screen prices by town

In Valencia the price goes up 10-15 % in city-centre blocks without a lift and with old-sized openings that mean making non-standard frames. In Alicante, the city with the highest demand for fly screens in the province, the base rate applies. In Torrevieja and Benidorm the price is the same as Alicante, with up to 10 % more for travel to outlying urbanisations.

What changes the price of a fly screen

Two windows of the same size can cost different amounts depending on the frame they go into, the mesh and the area. These are the factors:

• System. Sliding, roller, pleated, fixed or hinged, from cheapest to dearest.
• Size. Up to 1.5 m² is the base price; each additional square metre adds €15-25 on sliding screens and €30-45 on roller screens.
• Mesh. Standard fibreglass included; reinforced pet mesh, anti-pollen mesh or high-visibility mesh add €15-40 per opening.
• Window type. Aluminium sliding windows take a sliding screen directly; tilt-and-turn and casement windows need a fixed frame or a roller.
• Frame and colour. White and silver at the base price; bronze, anthracite or a RAL colour to match the joinery, 10-20 % more.
• Condition of the frame. In beach flats in San Juan or La Mata the old aluminium sometimes will not take screws and has to be fixed with brackets or structural adhesive.
• Number of openings. From 4 screens in the same visit the unit price drops 10-15 %.
• Season. From May to July factory lead times stretch; in winter we book you in the same week.

What the price includes and what it does not

Included: a measuring visit (free if you go ahead), made-to-measure manufacture, aluminium frames and fibreglass mesh, fittings, stainless steel screws, installation, adjustment of the sliding action and cleaning of the opening. 6-month written guarantee on the fitting and manufacturer's warranty on frames and mesh.

Not included: removing and disposing of old screens if there are many (charged at €5-10 each), repair of the roller shutter or the window if they are damaged, and wooden screens or special curved sizes. If a shutter does not go up properly and gets in the way of the screen, we can fix it in the same visit at the roller shutter repair price.

Real examples with the total

2-bedroom flat in Benalúa (Alicante): 4 sliding windows and 1 terrace door. Four 1.2 x 1.1 m sliding screens in white and one 2.1 x 2.3 m pleated screen for the terrace. Measured on a Tuesday, fitted the following Tuesday in two hours. Total: €445, IVA included.

Villa in Cabo de las Huertas: three roller screens for tilt-and-turn bedroom windows. Bronze frame to match the joinery, standard mesh. Total: €330.

Flat in El Cabanyal (Valencia): mesh replaced on 3 sliding screens with rusted rollers. New mesh, 6 replacement rollers and seals. An hour and a half. Total: €130.

How to save money and which offers to avoid

The €20-30 kit screens from Leroy Merlin or Bricodepot work well on standard-size windows; the problem comes with openings in older flats, where the frame has to be cut and the mesh ends up slack. If the €19 screen you saw online does not show the fitting price, fitting usually costs €40-50 on top.

To spend less without the screen falling out in August:

• Order all the windows in the house at once; from 4 openings the unit price drops.
• Choose sliding where the window is sliding; it is the cheapest system and the one that breaks least.
• Make the most of winter: same price, one-week factory lead time and an appointment at your convenience.
• If you have old screens with a sound frame, replace just the mesh for €25-45 instead of the whole screen.
• Wash the mesh every spring with soap and water; it extends its life by 3-4 years near the beach (see how to clean fly screens).

When it is worth doing it yourself

Adhesive or magnetic screens at €10-20 are fine for a summer let or a window that is hardly ever opened; we explain how to fit them straight so they stay put in the guide no-drill fly screens. Replacing the mesh on a sliding screen is also within anyone's reach with a spline roller and patience.
