Typical carpentry faults in Alicante
The first is the swollen door. In the flats of Playa de San Juan, Albufereta and Cabo de las Huertas the relative humidity sits above 70 % for much of the year. Chipboard interior doors take in moisture through the edge, gain a millimetre or two and jam against the frame. We plane the latch side, seal the edge with varnish and they stop sticking.
The second is rusted hinges and hardware. On the front line the salt attacks zinc-plated hinge pins: the door squeaks, drops and scrapes the floor. We replace all three hinges with stainless steel or brass, which last far better within 500 metres of the beach. That is 50-90 € with hinges included.
And the third, common in the 1970s flats of the Centro, Carolinas and Pla del Bon Repòs, is the built-in wardrobe with veneered sliding doors. The rollers split, the aluminium track dents and the door comes off when you open it. We replace rollers and track and adjust the height. What affects the carpenter's price in Alicante
The doors in the villas of Vistahermosa and Cabo de las Huertas are usually solid pine or iroko, heavier and hung on 120 mm hinges. They take more handling than a hollow door in a flat in Juan XXIII or Virgen del Remedio, and that shows at the top of the range.
With flooring, what adds cost is the state of what is underneath: if old carpet or laminate has to come up and the floor needs a levelling underlay, the time per m² goes up. In beach areas we recommend laminate with sealed joints or SPC vinyl, which does not swell with humidity; it costs a little more in materials but you will not be calling us back. When it is not just carpentry

How much does a carpenter in Alicante charge for a door that sticks?
40 to 70 € including IVA. If it only needs the hinges reset and the latch adjusted, it stays at the low end. If the door has swollen with the humidity and needs planing and the edge sealing, it is at the top end. Several doors on the same visit drop to 30-45 € each from the second one onwards.
I live in Playa de San Juan and the hinges have rusted. Which ones do you fit?
AISI 304 stainless steel or solid brass hinges, 100 mm for interior doors and 120 mm for front doors and heavy doors. That is 50-90 € for three, fitted. Within a kilometre of the sea it is not worth fitting zinc-plated ones again: in two or three years they are in the same state.
