The typical lock faults in Alicante
Alicante is two cities in one. On the front line of Playa de San Juan, Albufereta and Cabo de las Huertas the enemy is salt: brass cylinders that seize after a winter unused, keys that go in but will not turn, aluminium terrace door locks that jam. When the owner comes back in June, the door will not open. First we try to free the cylinder with dry lubricant; if the cam is pitted, we replace the cylinder with a nickel-plated one that copes better with the sea air.
In the 1970s flats of the Centro, Carolinas, San Blas and Pla del Bon Repòs the usual case is a wooden door with a mortice lock that slams shut, and in the blocks of Virgen del Remedio, Juan XXIII and Ciudad de Asís, 1990s reinforced doors with cylinders standing proud and unprotected escutcheons. Beware the 29 € locksmith at the top of Google
Search for a locksmith near me in Alicante and the first paid results promise openings from 19, 25 or 29 €. It is bait. Those companies are not in Alicante, they forward the call to a freelancer who comes from wherever he is, and they charge separately for the call-out, night rate, emergency rate and a new lock you did not need because they drilled it. We have seen 400 € bills for a slammed door in San Blas.

Do you have a 24-hour locksmith in Alicante?
Yes. From 8am to 9pm every day an opening costs 60-90 €. Outside those hours and on bank holidays we attend locksmith emergencies at a surcharge, 90-150 € for an opening. Arrival time at night is similar, 20-40 minutes, because there is no traffic, although in Playa de San Juan in summer it can get close to the maximum.
The key turns but the door will not open. What do I do?
Stop turning. It is usually the cylinder seized by salt or a snapped cam, very common in Albufereta and San Juan after months unused. If you force it, the key breaks inside and the job gets complicated. Send us a photo by WhatsApp: often the cylinder can be freed and replaced for 80-120 € in total.
How much does it cost to change the cylinder on a rental flat in Alicante?
40-60 € in labour plus the cylinder, from 35 € for an anti-bump one. In total, most changes in flats in San Juan or the Centro come to between 80 and 120 € with three keys. If you manage several holiday flats, we can suggest a smart lock or master keying so you are not relying on copies.
Do you open doors on villas in Vistahermosa and Cabo de las Huertas?
Yes. There the work is usually on garden gates, front doors with multipoint locks and bolts on side or garage doors. Opening a multipoint lock costs 90-180 € depending on the model. If the gate has an electric lock, we replace it, but any new wiring is done by a licensed electrician.
What happens if the lock cannot be opened without breaking it?
We tell you before we do it. In Alicante it happens mostly with high-security cylinders or rusted locks on the beachfront. In that case the agreed price includes drilling out and fitting the new cylinder, and you decide whether we go ahead. We never charge twice for a job we started.
