What happens to an awning on the Alicante seafront
200 metres from the sea, in Albufereta or Playa de San Juan, salt air gets into the elbow of the arm and rusts the steel cable and the pivot pin. The arm starts to squeak, then catches halfway out and finally hangs loose. If the arm is still straight we replace the cable and spring; if the profile is already pitted, we fit a new arm for 90-160 € and use stainless steel fixings so it does not happen again.
Awning fabric in Alicante does not usually tear, it burns out. The acrylic on a west-facing awning in Cabo de las Huertas loses its colour in 6-7 years and goes rough to the touch; the muddy spring rain leaves marks that never come out. We replace fabric up to 4 metres for 150-300 € with the fabric included, and for large villa terraces we quote per metre.
The third common call is the cassette awning whose box will not close fully. It is usually a motor limit switch knocked out after a day of levante wind, not a serious fault, and it is put right by reprogramming the end stops. We check that before proposing a new motor.
Made-to-measure awning fitting in Vistahermosa, San Blas and the Centro
In the villas of Vistahermosa and Cabo de las Huertas the awning usually spans a 5-6 metre terrace and needs two reinforced arms and, almost always, a motor with remote because of the weight. We check the wall before giving a price: in hollow-block construction we anchor with chemical resin. In the towers of Playa de San Juan the awning is bolted to the balcony ceiling and the fabric has to match what the comunidad de vecinos (residents' association) specifies.
In the 1970s flats of the Centro, Carolinas and Benalúa the balcony opening is narrow and the wall is solid brick, which makes anchoring easy but means measuring carefully so a folding-arm awning does not hit the roller shutter when it extends. For internal patios and galerías (utility balconies) in San Blas and Los Ángeles we fit exterior vertical awnings on guides, which stand up to wind better than a folding-arm awning.
How we get the job done in Alicante

- A visit within 20-40 minutes in Alicante city if the awning is hanging loose, or on whichever day suits you for installations. We work 8:00 to 21:00, Monday to Sunday.

Awnings that are not worth repairing
A 1990s awning in Albufereta with both arms pitted, a rusted roller tube and brackets eaten away by salt costs more to repair than to replace. In that case we tell you on the first visit: we take down and remove the old one and fit a new one of whatever model you choose. We do not sell awnings, we fit them, so the installation price is the same wherever you buy.
What we always check is the anchoring. In Juan XXIII and Virgen del Remedio there are blocks with thin balcony slabs where a large awning has opened up cracks; if the bracket moves, we have our builder in Alicante reinforce it before fitting new fabric. More worked quotes are on awning prices.

Frequently asked questions
How long does awning fabric last in Alicante with the sun and salt air?
Good-quality acrylic fabric lasts 7-10 years facing north or east and 5-7 facing west on the seafront. You notice it first in the colour and then in the stiffness of the fabric. Retracting it when it is not needed and rinsing it with fresh water twice a year adds a couple of seasons to that life.
Can you replace the arm without replacing the whole awning?
Yes. On most folding-arm models the arm is replaced on its own; it costs 90-160 € including labour. We only recommend a new awning when both arms, the roller tube and the brackets are all rusted at once, because then the sum of the parts exceeds the price of a complete one.
Do you fit awnings in holiday lets in San Juan?
Yes, and we work with managers who send us the key or let us in remotely. We recommend a motor with remote and fabric in the colour approved by the comunidad so guests never have to fight with a crank handle. We send photos of the finished job and the invoice to the owner wherever they are.
Do you fit the awning motor yourselves or is an electrician needed?
We fit it ourselves when there is an outdoor power point on the balcony or terrace. If a new cable has to be run from the consumer unit, that counts as electrical installation and a registered electrician we work with does it. We tell you from the photo, before quoting.
What is the call-out charge in Alicante?
